The annual Charity Shield is a pre-season match played between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and St George Illawarra Dragons, with the Charity Shield on the line each year. The match was played between the Rabbitohs and the St George Dragons annually, before the Dragons merged with the Illawarra Steelers in 1999. The Charity Shield has been in contention on 24 occasions with the Dragons winning 14 times, the Rabbitohs seven times and the match being drawn three times. But while the fistic fury of yesteryear has been lost in the annual contest, the importance that the two sides place on it has not been. Fighting has been replaced by fighting words. Jason Taylor and Nathan Brown, the respective coaches of South Sydney and St George Illawarra, both agree that the game, to be played this Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium at Homebush Bay, will be as physical as a premiership game - and almost as important. With both sides trialling new players as well as new playing styles, and with a number of positions still up for grabs, the stakes have been raised significantly. "There's a fair few positions up for grabs there's a fair few blokes there that will be treating it as their first game," Brown said. "They know if they don't perform against JT's mob on Saturday they won't get to play in the opening game against the Tigers." For Brown's Dragons, Mark Gasnier will play despite suffering a ruptured bicep in the corresponding game last year. And according to Brown, "he's not going to be taking it soft". Dean Young will return after playing just three games last season due to knee troubles. For Taylor's Rabbitohs, Craig Wing will return - part of a significant style alteration from Taylor, who will play left and right halves this season - after playing no games with the club since 1999. "There's a lot on the line for the players," Taylor said. "We'll be ready to play like it's the first game, particularly for the first period, because we want to be ready to go when round one comes around. "It's great to have a game where we know the intensity's going to be like it is in round one. In the other trial games you can do some things and think that was OK but you don't really know because things are going to go up a few levels come round one. This game's a lot closer." It almost always is. Yesterday, as the two sides named near full-strength line-ups for the game, Craig Young and Ken Stewart were there to hear them, as captains in the first Charity Shield in 1982. That game was won 9-7 by the Dragons, continuing a tradition of tight and tough contests. "It was to raise funds for the hospital, which was pretty important, but because of the intensity of the game, some of the players went off to the hospital the next day," Young said. "The Charity Shield was never a trial, it was a contest that's evolved. I remember turning up there to the game, as soon as you walked into the ground, you had a feeling that something was going to happen, and with the personalities in the team, it certainly did." Stewart said: "After five minutes we knew it wasn't a trial - everyone had to watch their own back," Stewart recalled. "At the end of the game, everybody was pretty bruised. The next year you knew what to expect and any new guys coming to the club, we said, 'Just look after yourself because no one else can look after you because things will happen in the game that don't normally happen in trials'. "[Nowadays] they've probably got 20 or 30 TV cameras following them around the paddock where in 1982 we had nothing, all you had to worry about was Albert [Young] chasing you around the paddock." Brown said his first Charity Shield experience was as a spectator after he was brought to the club - watching from the sidelines with Gorden Tallis and Matt Parsons. "Souths had signed Eion Crossan, and Souths kicked off to St George, anyway St George played their four or five tackles and kicked it down, and Dave Barnhill hit Eion Crossan and basically knocked him out cold, busted his nose," he said. "The match raised money for hospitals - and that's where everyone ended up," Reddy said of the 1982 bloodbath. "It was every man for himself. It was a tough game, especially at Redfern where the lights weren't great and there was little TV coverage. There were plenty of scars and stitches." A quarter of a century on and the annual Charity Shield match still conjures talk of biffo and brawling. Both camps are aware that five months of training and pent-up frustration may surface at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night. Like the once rampaging Reddy, ex-Souths halfback Graham Murray remembers the ferocity of the 1982 game. "I remember we had our team photo taken the next week and about four of the boys had black eyes," Murray said. "That game was brutal and willing. It wasn't like a normal trial." This year's game will be no different, with Souths coach Jason Taylor yesterday admitting emotions would be at fever-pitch on Saturday evening. 'It has a lot to do with the crowd," Taylor said. "The crowd comes and their excitement about the game fills the players with excitement. "They are running out for their first game of the season (in Sydney) and the crowd roars like a grand final. "It just fires the players up. "The adrenalin starts to pump and it is a different game. "That's what lifts the intensity. "It's great to have a trial game that will have the same intensity as the round one match. "Players can go out thinking one thing and after five minutes think, 'Hang on, this is something else'." At a Charity Shield launch yesterday, former St George prop Craig Young and ex-Souths hooker Ken Stewart - who both played in the inaugural game, won 9-7 by St George - spoke about the great traditions of the Charity Shield. "The Charity Shield has never been a trial," Young said. "I remember turning up to the ground (in 1982) and you could feel something was going to happen." Stewart added: ""Everyone had to watch their backs. Everyone came off bruised after that game. "These days they have 20 or 30 cameras chasing you around. "In 1982, I had to worry about 'Albert' (Young) chasing me around. "The Charity Shield game is never soft. It's tough and it will be on for young and old, don't worry about that." Taylor and Dragons coach Nathan Brown yesterday named strong squads. "I have great memories of guys like Ken Stewart, Mario Fenech and Tony Rampling playing for Souths in the Charity Shield," Taylor said. "Those names bring back memories." Brown also has his Charity Shield memories, saying: "I remember being at a game and seeing Saints forward David Barnhill breaking the nose of Souths winger Eion Crossan." "I remember thinking, 'S..t, this isn't a trial'. But I'd like this weekend's game to be a good, physical, fair contest." Brown has named Dean Young, who missed most of last year through injury, at lock for the game and Ben Hornby on the bench. Jamie Soward and Rangi Chase will be the Dragons halves. Wing breached the Dragons' defence in the 75th minute, forcing his way over for a try with the conversion giving the Rabbitohs a 24-20 victory. The Rabbitohs scored four tries to the Dragons' three. After a slow start from both teams the Rabbitohs opened the scoring with tries to Yileen Gordon and Germaine Paulson and opened up a 12-0 lead after 29 minutes. The Rabbitohs certainly looked to be the stronger team in the first forty but conceded a late try against the run of play and found themselves ahead just 12-6 at the break. The Dragons looked like a different team in the second half, and captain Mark Gasnier made the most of some shaky South Sydney defence to claim the lead for his side with two well-taken tries. It took the re-injection of hooker Issac Luke to spark the Rabbitohs back into action, although a nice try to Feluti Talanoa was answered almost immediately by Jamie Soward as the lead continued to change hands. The final say of the match went to Craig Wing, the Prodigal Son of the Rabbitohs, who scored a powerful try in the 75th minute to reclaim the lead for his new side and this time they were able to hold onto it, despite some desperate last-minute Dragons attack that saw replacement Lagi Setu denied by the video referee. Overall it was a deserved victory for South Sydney, who looked very sharp around the rucks thanks to Issac Luke, Craig Wing and Eddie Paea. Roy Asotasi led the way up front, while Fetuli Talanoa and Yileen Gordon were also heavily involved from the back. Their only notable injury concern was a hamstring twinge for Nigel Vagana. The Dragons took their time to get into this match, and relied heavily on Jamie Soward and Mark Gasnier to produce their attacking spark. Dean Young, Rangi Chase and Ben Creagh were also amongst their best, while their wingers Jason Nightingale and Brett Morris look like they could cause plenty of problems for opposition sides this year.
