Dally Messenger statue unveiled at SFS

A bronze statue of Dally Messenger is a fitting tribute to the "first and greatest hero" of rugby league, Premier Morris Iemma says.
A bronze, life-size cast of Herbert Henry "Dally" Messenger was unveiled by Mr Iemma outside the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday.
It is the second subject of ten to be honoured in the SCG Trust's Basil Sellers Sports Sculptures Project.
The first sculpture, of former Australian cricket captain Richie Benaud, was unveiled in January.
Mr Iemma said the sculpture, which will be positioned between the stadium and the SCG next door, was a tribute to a legend of the game.
"He was the greatest footballer of all time," Mr Iemma said at the unveiling.
"He was rugby league's first and true celebrity."
Messenger's grandson Dally Messenger III, who was 21 when he died, spoke of how he thought his grandfather might have reacted to the statue.
"He would be looking at all this and thanking his team-mates," Messenger III said.
"He would have been thanking the organisation's administrators.
"It is excellent that rugby league is taking its rightful place (in Australian sport) and that Dally should be the first subject honoured."

One hundred years of Rugby League
By Mark Darko

Dally Messenger, considered by many as the greatest Ruby League player of all time.
Quote:
Rugby League was born in Australia one hundred years ago and has survived for a century through turbulent times, feasting on upheaval and confrontation.
Torn away from the main Rugby Union movement, Ruby League was born to fend for itself as a child of violence and struggling by its own integrity, while fearless administrators and great players suffered deprivation during its founding years to give the game a life and future. They persevered and were triumphant against mighty odds.
In Sydney during 1908 the breakaway Rugby League Code was completed and a new era in Australian sport was to unfold across the nation with some states adopting it as their preferred national game of choice. Families, friendships were on opposite sides; families and friends became physical against each other and would go to a great deal to avoid seeing or talking with each other. Some were the old Union while the others followers embraced the new League option.
Mainly outside of Sydney there was a further split in the national football scene; the newly adopted Victorian Football League further complicating matters and Victoria elected to go down this avenue.
The last one hundred years has been a long and tumultuous time for Rugby League, starting with clandestine meetings by prominent Rugby Union players including the greatest of all, Dally Messenger in the Sydney sports bar of the legendary cricketer, Victor Trumper in 1907.
One of the founding fathers of the game who was there was James L. Giltinan, former competitive walker and a sporting enthusiastic. Some suggested later that he was only there though because he was only interested in the financial benefits that the code could deliver for him.
Rugby League has grown during the past century from a fledgling sport fighting for a share of Sydneys sporting limelight and has become a monolith which now turns over tens of Millions of dollars per annum. Its also for many become something that must be watched, listened to or spoken about every week during the season.
