Post #1 Russell Ira Crowe wroteon Aug 6, 2008 at 7:25 PM I just had to share this awesome written by a great friend of mine - Adam Greenwell: 3:10 TO YUMA : REVIEW BY ADAM GREENWELL, FOR CHAFF, MASSEY UNIVERSITY NEW ZEALAND Although 3:10 to Yuma has been praised as the greatest Western since Clint Eastwood's masterpiece Unforgiven (1992), and as the beginning of a new revival of the Western genre, this reviewer doesn't see the greatness of this film in those terms. The original 3:10 to Yuma (1957) starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin, and told Elmore Leornard's original story in a compact 92 minutes. James Mangold's remake tells the same story in nearly two hours, with more action scenes and gunfights. It's not so much what makes 3:10 to Yuma an outstanding film as who makes it great. In my view, it is the best film Russell Crowe - arguably the Marlon Brando of our times- has made since Romper Stomper. It is the best film that Christian Bale has made since Batman Begins. Given an exceptionally well-written story by Elmore Leonard - the Dickens of Detroit- Crowe and Bale make a powerful and electric cinematic duo. In much the same way that Paul Newman and Robert Redford had an onscreen rapport that made box-office dynamite, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale have a double-barrelled onscreen intensity that could work in any genre. Christian Bale plays Dan Evans, a one-legged Civil War veteran in Arizona, whose barn is burned down by debt collectors when he cannot meet the mortgage payments on his ranch. Dan's landlord wants him off the property anyway, so that it can be sold to the railroad. As a former sharpshooter, Dan risks looking like a doormat to his teenage son. His younger son has tuberculosis, and his long-suffering wife is wondering how they can make ends meet. While in town to argue his case, Dan finds himself involved in the arrest of notorious bandit Ben Wade (Crowe), then offered $200 to escort Wade to a town called Contention, where Wade will be put onto the 3:10 train to Yuma Prison and thereafter hanged. After a decoy stagecoach is intercepted and discovered by Wade's henchmen, the group riding him to Contention have no choice but to go through steep mountains and fierce Apache territory. In a journey that sees Dan and Ben save one another's lives, as lawmakers are killed and tough guys back down, both men, unlike others in this gory tale, get what they want. That resolution forges a touching, yet heroic bond, between the earnest Dan and the roguish Ben. Recently Christian Bale, in the Bob Dylan-biopic movie "I'm Not There", performed the little known Dylan gospel classic Pressing On, with co-star Heath Ledger deeply drinking in the powerful message. Pressing On could very well be the signature tune of Bale's character in 3:10 to Yuma. In Romper Stomper, Crowe plays Hando, the leader of a racist, skinhead gang in Melbourne, Australia. In that movie, Hando sensitively reads to his captivated girlfriend. Hando is gentle and dangerous. So is Wade. In 3:10 to Yuma, Wade delicately sketches a nude prostitute. While Wade claims to be a rotten leader of a bloodthirsty gang, he shows his playful and philosophical side throughout . I first saw Romper Stomper in Palmerston North in 1992. I ran up to a Pentecostal Christian couple I knew, in the streets , straight after, imploring them to see it. "Isn't that about Skinheads?", they replied, probably thinking I was possessed.
