The changing of the guard at the top of the South Sydney Rugby League Club is raising questions about the future of the game in its Sydney heartland. Sydney's nine rugby league clubs are all struggling financially and the director of one is predicting that they can't all survive. Yesterday the celebrity owner of South Sydney, Peter Holmes a Court, stood aside as Executive Chairman, just two years after taking over the club with Hollywood actor, Russell Crowe. And while the club's new CEO says Souths will survive, others aren't so sure. David Mark has our report. DAVID MARK: It all started so well. The Hollywood actor Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes a Court tipped millions into South Sydney and for a while it seemed to be working. The team made the finals last year while a documentary and a plan to re-open the leagues club without poker machines meant that the publicity machine was in over-drive. But South Sydney's fortunes have dived this year and co-owner Peter Holmes a Court appears to be sharing the same fortune. Souths have won just one game out of 10 and his anti-pokie plan has been quietly shelved. The ad-man John Singleton has tried his hand at running a rugby league club, North Sydney and he knows the pitfalls. JOHN SINGLETON: New ownership mate, an old club. There was always going to be problems and success papers over many cracks which it did last year and obviously it is not as easy as people think. DAVID MARK: The Chief Executive of the National Rugby League, David Gallop is offering qualified support for the changes at Souths. DAVID GALLOP: You want to see your clubs get their front office in order and be operating efficiently and clearly there are a few dramas there at the moment so the sooner it settles down, the sooner it will be better for them. DAVID MARK: Souths lost more than $4-million last year but the club's new Chief Executive Officer, Shane Richardson says things will improve. SHANE RICHARDSON: What we have got to do now is make sure that we focus on the areas such as stadium, such as membership, such as our corporate areas and television rights to make sure that we actually last long-term. The game will last a long-term it is whether some individual clubs will last the same long-term. DAVID MARK: Indeed Souths may be in the spot right now but there is agreement throughout rugby league that times are tough and the nine Sydney clubs are facing a crisis. GREG ALEXANDER: The leagues club has always propped up the football club and you know that is why leagues clubs, how they came about. DAVID MARK: Greg Alexander is a former champion half-back with the Penrith Panthers. He is now a director of the football club and the Panthers Leagues Club, one of the biggest in New South Wales. He says the tax on poker machines, new anti-smoking laws and a sluggish economy are responsible for a downturn in revenue from the leviathan leagues clubs. GREG ALEXANDER: It has been a massive kick in the guts for leagues clubs and those leagues clubs in particular that are trying to support rugby league clubs. DAVID MARK: Is the football club running at a loss? GREG ALEXANDER: Yes, football clubs always run at losses. I think there was only one NRL team and that was Brisbane that made a profit last year. There is always a shortfall and that is what leagues clubs were there for. To fill in that shortfall and that can range anywhere between a million and five million dollars. DAVID MARK: You seem to be arguing that the football clubs have been too reliant on the leagues clubs for too long. Is that the case? GREG ALEXANDER: Absolutely. I think we are a product of how we were born and the leagues clubs poker machine money providing money to football clubs. There was always going to be a time where that was going to run dry or something. I think league people became complacent about where their money was coming from and it has come back to bite them. DAVID MARK: How serious is the situation then? Can all the Sydney clubs survive? GREG ALEXANDER: No, I don't think so. I don't think they can. No, there is too many clubs in Sydney. DAVID MARK: How many do you think will go? GREG ALEXANDER: It is too hard, it's too hard for me to give you a number. I would be guessing. Let's just put it this week that nine is too many. DAVID GALLOP: It is a distinct possibility. DAVID MARK: The NRL's Chief Executive Officer, David Gallop. DAVID GALLOP: Some clubs won't survive unless there is a change. That is about as definitive as you can be. DAVID MARK: Is South Sydney one of the clubs that is most likely to go. DAVID GALLOP: Not necessarily although they are certainly at the moment experiencing what happens when your footy team is not travelling that well. You tend to have less people going to your games and your gate receipts are down but the pressure is on quite a few Sydney clubs as well as South Sydney. Rabbitohs part-owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court might have lost $5m and their friendship, but both stand to profit from a potentially lucrative property deal. SAVING the South Sydney Rabbitohs has cost Peter Holmes a Court and Russell Crowe $5 million, with Crowe putting $1million of his own money into the club on the day Mr Holmes a Court relinquished control of the board. Yet as sources within the rugby league club play down the extent of the rift between the Hollywood gladiator and the second-generation businessman, The Australian can confirm both men stand to profit directly from a potentially lucrative property deal. It is understood Mr Holmes a Court has sunk $4 million of his own fortune into the Rabbitohs since taking a 75 per cent controlling share of the club with Crowe two years ago. While Crowe has been less spendthrift than his boardroom partner, he committed more than $1 million to the club's ongoing salvage operation at a board meeting on Monday - the day he accepted Mr Holmes a Court's resignation as executive chairman. Speculation has surrounded the motives behind the club's 2006 rescue package offered to prop up the then failing licensed South Sydney Leagues Club. It now appears Mr Holmes a Court and Crowe stand to profit handsomely from a planned redevelopment of the Leagues Club's Chalmers Street premises in Redfern. The club bought the address by open tender for $13.2 million and subsequently entered a joint venture agreement to develop the property. It is expected to deliver Mr Holmes a Court and Crowe - as part-owners of the club - millions of dollars in profits when completed towards the end of this year. The developer behind the project, Trivest, yesterday pointed out that Crowe and Mr Holmes a Court would also bear any loss from the project. He said associated costs could climb as high as $20 million. However, property industry experts said the completed project could fetch upwards of $35 million when completed. Any profits flowing from the deployment will be split between South Sydney Rugby League Football Club (50 per cent) and Trivest and fellow property group Sakkara, which each hold a quarter stake in the project. The pair's profit margin will be determined by the state of the market, which has deteriorated substantially since 2006, at the end of the year when the development is completed. Club sources said that had Crowe not pledged $1 million in funding at the meeting where Mr Holmes a Court stood down in the middle of a disastrous season, Souths' immediate future would have been in doubt. Yesterday, the club was forced to respond to questions raised by former Rabbitohs boss George Piggins in an interview with Sydney broadcaster Alan Jones about its government-funded charity, Souths Care. In a statement, the Rabbitohs and Souths Care described as unsubstantiated claims the charity had failed to account for $2million of federal government funding for an indigenous employment scheme. A day after replacing out-of-favour business partner Peter Holmes a Court with a new Rabbitohs chairman, the Hollywood star - who has been laying low this week - convened a secret lunch with the club's 2009 recruit Luke Lewis. The Panthers star - pictured with Crowe, right, by The Daily Telegraph photographer John Grainger - agreed to join Souths last month, but has since developed cold feet, citing "family reasons". Proudly wearing a Rabbitohs jumper, Crowe met Lewis and his manager Greg Willett at his Wolloomoolloo apartment about 1pm before the trio slipped downstairs for lunch at the exclusive Kingsley's Steakhouse. Holmes a Court has also vowed to attend Sunday's clash against St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium. There was speculation Lewis was nervous about joining Souths because of the past week's drama. Prior to being dumped as chairman on Monday in favour of predecessor Nick Pappas, Holmes a Court warned the club's future could not be guaranteed after he and Crowe lost $4.2 million last season. Lewis, however, last night stressed his second thoughts were not related to the off-field controversies. Amid claims from senior South Sydney players that they have been "kept in the dark" about dramatic changes to the club - in particular the appointment of veteran coach John Lang as a football consultant - it is also understood halves Jeremy Smith and Ben Rogers are poised to walk out. Despite meeting co-owner Russell Crowe yesterday, Lewis is set to rebuff a lucrative four-year deal to join Souths and seems certain to stay at Penrith. "I don't want to go into the details but a family situation has come up that is pretty upsetting," Lewis told the Herald last night. "What's happening at Souths has nothing to do with it. If it wasn't for this [family issue], I would be there for sure. Meeting with Russell was a great experience and we hardly talked about football. But football is the least of my concerns at the moment." While new chief executive Shane Richardson remained confident about securing the former Kangaroos and NSW back line star, Panthers director Greg Alexander said on 2UE last night he was "reasonably confident" Lewis would stay. Penrith have until round 13 to match Souths' offer, but Lewis insisted: "I expect a decision by Thursday at the latest." And club insiders revealed a player clean-out was imminent, with co-captain David Kidwell and veteran players Dean Widders, Nigel Vagana and Shannon Hegarty believed to be under pressure to leave after their contracts expire. Vagana is yet to decide if he wants to stay, while Kidwell, Widders and Hegarty have one year remaining on their deals. As revealed in the Herald yesterday, coach Jason Taylor had an explosive meeting with Crowe at a Darlinghurst cafe on Monday morning and, according to an observer, "was saying this bloke has bloke let me down. That bloke let me down". Richardson last night denied a clean-out was on the cards. "There's no truth in that at all. It's quite amazing some of the stuff that goes around." He also insisted that Lang's appointment wasn't "a job for the boys", while Kidwell was not clear what the premiership-winning coach would do. Another senior player, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said it was frustrating not to have been consulted on the decision. "It is hard, it's a bit frustrating. I think this will be cleared up pretty soon as long as they don't keep us in the dark too long," he said. "JT was saying that [Lang] would not have that much to do with what we do on the field. I'm not too sure what John Lang will actually do but I don't think he is going to be involved in the footy side of things." Richardson said Lang would not have a hands-on role and would be dealing "with football matters, not coaching". Asked if he had been given the job because of their long association - the pair have worked together at Brisbane Easts, Cronulla and Penrith - Richardson said: "It's not a case of jobs for the boys. John Lang is one of the most successful coaches in the game. We're not in a good enough position to ignore someone of his calibre. "John won't be working with the day-to-day running of the team but putting in place the best possible systems to make sure we succeed." As the Rabbitohs reel from one PR disaster to the next, leagues club chairman Bill Alexiou-Hucker yesterday confirmed members will receive a proposal supporting poker machines at July's annual general meeting. The shock development came on another trying, during which: RABBITOHS officials were forced to deny they had siphoned $2 million in federal funding via the club's charity arm, Souths Cares; and RABBITOHS sponsorship chief Chris Green was dumped. Holmes a Court's bold plan to operate a leagues club without poker machine revenue will still be put to members. But it is now in doubt after it emerged he will not be driving the proposal because the football club had withdrawn its management bid last month. The withdrawal, coming on the back of across-the-board cost-cutting at Souths football club, underlines concerns the Rabbitohs were in financial strife. A $300,000 annual management fee the football club had agreed to pay the leagues club was believed to be the main reason why the Rabbitohs had backed out. The deal was struck last year in a Memorandum of Understanding, later rescinded when proposed changes were tied up in government red tape. Holmes a Court wanted legislation enacted to abolish the club's sign-in desk, but activated a get-out from the MoU when he didn't alert State Parliament in time. "From there on the football club board looked at the terms, how things were going financially at the football club, and they decided while they would onwardly support the leagues club they wanted to focus on football club matters," Mr Alexiou-Hucker said. Leagues club members will now vote for the proposal at the AGM in early July. Board members were confident it would pass with Mr Holmes a Court's formal backing, but the outcome was not so certain now. "We were always going to the members to let the members decide," Mr Alexiou-Hucker said. "Because of what is happening with the football club it is not going to stop us. We have been working on a business model to put to members without poker machines. But I am now starting to think we will have to go to them with a proposal with poker machines and we will have to let the members decide which way to go." Rabbitohs officials last night angrily denied claims from former patriarch George Piggins that South Cares had not accounted for $2 million in public funding. Souths Cares general manager John Hutchinson said the program had only received $32,500 in funding, and further hand-outs depended on its individual performance.

John Grainger PENRITH have announced the re-signing of star Luke Lewis, dealing a major blow to embattled fellow NRL club South Sydney who were also chasing the utility. The Panthers said they had extended Lewis' stay at the club for another four years. "I'm very pleased that Luke has been able to extend his tenure with the Panthers," CEO Michael Leary said in a statement. "Luke has been one of our most versatile players this year and is performing well. "It is satisfying to see a local junior play good football with the Panthers." Lewis played three State of Origin matches for New South Wales in 2004 and was made 18th man for game one this year. Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said the club were disappointed Lewis decided to stay with the Panthers, but appreciated his decision. "We understand the personal reasons involved in his decision and we wish him the best of luck in the future," Richardson said.

Maybe I should have put it in the Den but it didn't quite seem to fit there either. I didn't even know what I was going to be writing until it was written but here it is... I'm way beyond just being interested in the team just because RC is an owner. I was pretty sure of that last year but it truly came home to me when he was absent for so many months this season and I was still totally engaged in the team. With all of the nerve wracking news that has hit in the last few days, my first thought is that I just want to go crawl in bed, pull the covers over my head, and not come out until the end of the season. Then I realized how selfish that is. My feelings aren't even a drop in the bucket compared to what the owners, players, coach, and mgmt must be feeling. A big part of my frustration is that I don't know of a way to be proactive in showing support. Anybody have any ideas? Just being a member and sending supporting positive vibes across the ocean just doesn't seem like enough. Being an international fan and not being able to go to games to show support sucks!! I've been giving it some thought. I know that they need money and I'm certainly willing to give a bit as I can but what I want to do right now is more along the lines of emotional support. I was thinking that an International Petition of Support would answer. I'd give a bundle right now to have the email listings of all the international members. We could write up the petition of support and send it out to all the international members asking them to go to a site set up specifically for them to sign. No mention of RC at all. I'm sure we could figure out a way to pass it along via the official Souths site. It may not be much but it would be better than nothing. Moot point though without the list to be able to get the word out. Hmmm...I wonder if Spinner Howland could be enlisted. I bet he's got a doozy of an email listing. Seriously, I think that it would be best to set up the site with the petition (which I haven't got the foggiest idea how to do)... and then maybe make a notifying post on those sites? I sorta hate doing it at those sites because a lot of those peeps are probably domestic and it sorta takes away the thunder by letting everybody know it's taking place. Not to mention the fact that if it bombs then anybody official who monitors those sites is gonna feel even more like crap. No matter how it's done it's bound to get some trolls so it would be nice to be able to delete that junk before the signed petition is presented.
