The latest from Ray "Crowe assassin" Chesterton on the Bunnies situation:
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,23761185-5001030,00.html I've not been posting on the boards much lately, but I have to say that the Chesterton article made my blood boil enough to elicit a response. I had to send this to him via the e-mail response function: Mr Chesterton,I wonder if he will have the cajones to publish it? (i.e. he can dish it out, but can he take it?) BB ![]() |

WTG, BB!!! I'm glad you posted your response cuz I seriously doubt it's going to see the light of day under that rock that Chesterton unfortunately
crawls out from periodically to spread his diseased rhetoric.

Hope your email gets posted, BB! It really DOES seem too much to ask that these people CHECK their facts before publishing their rhetoric. If they want to
get taken seriously, maybe they should have some integrity first.
Here's an interesting article that shows there's a WHOLE other side here. Holmes a Court jumped, wasn't pushed: Richardson

This is sooooo sad it's almost funny.
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/nrl/story/0,26746,23762622-5003409,00.html Holmes a Court always intended to hand in his chairmanship - but not until the end of this season. His demise was suddenly complete yesterday, with the remaining seven directors convinced the club's balance had skewed too far in favour of business over football. He will remain as a director and Souths ownership structure does not change. Souths' Gosford move 'not on the
cards'
May 27, 2008 The possibility of South Sydney re-locating to the Central Coast appears remote after Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson said any move away from Redfern was in the hands of the NRL club's members. Back at the helm following Peter Holmes a Court's decision to stand down as executive chairman, Richardson was forced into damage control on Tuesday after club patriarch George Piggins put forward a rescue package for the club which included a move to Gosford. But Richardson hosed down any talk of the club pulling out of Redfern. "Neither George, nor Peter Holmes a Court, nor Russell Crowe has the right to move the Rabbitohs," Richardson told a Sydney radio station. "The only people under the article of the association of the club who have that right are the members - they still have that right. "If the members get together and call an AGM to vote on the fact to move the club to the Central Coast - which I've got to say is highly unlikely - then we worry about the Central Coast. "I respect George and always have done ... the reality is it's not going to happen." There was little doubt about how the members felt on Tuesday with the club's fan forum, which is only available to members, calling for Piggins to stay away from the club. The Rabbitohs, like most Sydney NRL clubs, are in dire straits financially. It prompted Holmes a Court, in what was one of his last acts as executive chairman, to say he could not guarantee the club's future. Piggins' proposal involved him putting forward $3 million to buy the club off Holmes a Court and Crowe, on the proviso the club then moved to the Central Coast and the $3 million was returned to him out of the $8 million grant offered by the NRL for re-location. Members described the idea as "disgusting", the general feel of the topic summed up in one response which read: "Any relocation to Gosford would mean losing our identity. There is no way we would remain the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Maybe at first, but sooner or later we would be the Central Coast Rabbitohs or the Central Coast something. Souths would be no more. You go to Gosford, you lose me and thousands of other supporters." Piggins denied he was keen to get involved in the club again. "I'd help try to get it to Gosford but I'm out of it now," Piggins told reporters. "I have no intention of going back." There was little comment from players on Tuesday with injured halfback Craig Wing forced to sum up the mood of the squad. New football consultant John Lang was not on hand at Tuesday's training session, and there is still some doubt over his exact role with the club. Wing, heralded as the club's saviour after returning to the club this season only to be injured in the opening minutes of the club's first match, admitted the club was at a low. But he denied it had anything to do with off-field distractions. "Obviously the performance on the field and where we're coming and all the losses is affecting us ... but in regards to what's happening with the management of the club and the structure hasn't really affected us at all because we've got no control over it," Wing said. "As hard as it is for all the fans it's just as hard for us because it's actually embarrassing for us where we are on the ladder and we're doing everything we can to change that. "By no means are we going to let what's happening at the club or the structure of the club be an excuse of where we are on the field - it's a weak, easy way out." Despite taking part in training on Tuesday Wing is still a few weeks away from a return to action. His absence was again evident as the coach Jason Taylor named yet another new halves pairing for Sunday's match against St George Illawarra with George Ndaira the new No.7 alongside Dean Widders. |

Rabbitohs and
Souths Cares Provide Answers on Souths Cares Funding
27 May 2008 The South Sydney Rabbitohs and Souths Cares have responded to unsubstantiated reports today that the charitable arm of the Club has not accounted for $2 million of Federal Government funding. The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) approved an Indigenous employment program to be run by Souths Cares based on Souths Cares assisting to place Indigenous people in employment. So far the only funding that has been provided is $32,500 to put together the proposal which has been done with the assistance of an external organisation called Corporate Conscience, and any further funding will be forwarded to Souths Cares based on performance of placing Indigenous people in jobs over a period of time. Neither the Club, nor Souths Cares, has received any funding above the aforementioned level. General Manager of Souths Cares John Hutchinson said: "We have a lot of work to do to receive any government funding which is completely based on performance. "I have a meeting with DEEWR next week to discuss the proposal and the next steps in helping find jobs for Indigenous people. We've started to put together our action plan and strategies to make this a reality and we have plenty of work to do before we can complete this project." Souths Cares is a registered non-profit organisation that operates within the South Sydney Football Club. Its charter is to support disadvantaged young people and their families in the South Sydney area as well as various Indigenous communities and projects throughout Australia. In order to maximise its reach and impact in the community, Souths Cares seeks to engage the Rabbitohs in the delivery of programs and raises funds through sponsorship, fundraising and collaborative partnerships. |

Russell Crowe's lunch to keep his new star
Luke Lewis
By Josh Massoud and Brad Watts May 28, 2008
FRESH from applying the blowtorch to the South Sydney board, Russell Crowe again stepped in yesterday in a bid to prevent another walk-out from Redfern. A day after replacing out-of-favour business partner Peter Holmes a Court with a new Rabbitohs chairman, the Hollywood star - who has been laying low this week - convened a secret lunch with the club's 2009 recruit Luke Lewis. The Panthers star agreed to join Souths last month, but has since developed cold feet, citing "family reasons". Proudly wearing a Rabbitohs jumper, Crowe met Lewis and his manager Greg Willett at his Wolloomoolloo apartment about 1pm before the trio slipped downstairs for lunch at the exclusive Kingsley's Steakhouse. Rabbitohs coach Jason Taylor and re-instated Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson also joined the meal, held in a private dining room on the restaurant's second floor. The group emerged just before 2pm, with Crowe cagey about his decision on Monday to dump co-owner Holmes a Court as Rabbitohs' chairman. "I don't want to have any conversations about that," he told The Daily Telegraph. "We've got some other business to attend to today." But when asked about the future of the struggling club - which is sitting a distant last on the NRL premiership table - the Gladiator star smiled and gave a thumbs up, saying: "It's looking good." Holmes a Court was not invited to yesterday's lunch and refused to comment directly on either his future at Souths or his friendship with Crowe yesterday. However there was speculation last night that the millionaire businessman and Crowe had met last night for dinner to discuss their differences. Holmes a Court did, however, promise to clarify his position in an email to Rabbitohs members later this week. Holmes a Court has also vowed to attend Sunday's clash against St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium. There was speculation Lewis was nervous about joining Souths because of the past week's drama. Prior to being dumped as chairman on Monday in favour of predecessor Nick Pappas, Holmes a Court warned the club's future could not be guaranteed after he and Crowe lost $4.2 million last season. Lewis, however, last night stressed his second thoughts were not related to the off-field controversies. Instead, NSW's 18th man for Origin One said "family reasons" might force him to renege on the deal and stay at Penrith. "How I feel has nothing to do with footy," Lewis said. "There's a couple of personal things with my family playing on my mind. "JT and Richo are excited about me coming to Souths, but I'll probably have to think about things over the next week or so." Lewis said the lunch was planned "ages ago" and not in response to revelations he might back out. "It was really good to meet Russell - I'd only spoken to him on the phone before." |

I wasn't as upset listening to the GPiggens interview as I thought I would be. I must be getting used to him bagging on the mgmt. At least he wasn't
down on JT or the team. However I think his proposal is ridiculous and I think he knows that nobody is going to take him up on it.
Nobody seems to be taking into account that things have been set in motion to bring more money into the club but haven't come to fruition yet. The Leagues club is being revamped and not bringing in any money yet. Not just the club itself but all of the space that is to be rented out etc. A move to Gosford at this time seems silly. As Darrin pointed out they would have to break their 10 year contract with ANZ stadium. The 8 to 12 million they are speculating to receive to relocate and after paying GP his 3 mil back isn't enough to get them through the first year in Gosford. They won't have the state of the art training facility that's been built at Redfern (?). They will lose a lot of their Sydney based fan support and won't have time to build a Central Coast fan base to pick up the slack and they won't have an established Leagues Club which hopefully will soon restart to help support the footy club. They could and probably would lose a lot of their corperate sponsers. The 4 mil deficit they had this year (due mainly to having to spend money to make money) would look like a drop in the bucket compared to what they would lose in their second year at Gosford after the relocation money was spent. Maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about but that's how I see it now. Ali

As far as the Souths Cares article, I'm glad they were able to nip that bullcrap right from under the tail. At least I hope they have. The last thing they
need right now is a substantiated scandal or claims of mismanagement in another area.
Arghhhh....Luke Lewis... this is not the time to be doing this turn around to the bunnies!!! Wasn't it just last week he was saying everything was hunky-dory with coming to Souths? I suppose he wanted some confirmation that they were going to be able to pay him before he picked up and moved. So much for it being a "secret" meeting. Sounds like the media must be camped out watching the comings and goings at Wolloomoolloo. Ali

When I first saw that screencap of Russell in conjunction with a recent TV report, I panicked at not seeing the ponytail, then noticed the Bergen hoodie. Whew!
I'll go listen to George now, thanks Ali, for telling me it shouldn't raise my BP. LOL Apologies if this has been posted, I didn't see it. An excellent article about Peter from Josh Massoud. I only wish he'd printed it a week ago when Peter was really getting the crap. Maybe Peter tried to take on too much, do too much, and tried too hard, and maybe he caught the ire of some, but Peter has been working his ass off for the club. http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,23768636-5001030,00.html Too much to do for Souths IF Peter Holmes a Court is guilty of anything, it's trying to do too much too soon. And trying to be too many things to too many people. And trying too hard. Damned if I know how he lasted this long in rugby league. If there's one occasion that summed up Peter rabbit it was the eve of South Sydney's exhibition match in Jacksonville, Florida, earlier this year. The modest lobby bar of the Oceanfront Comfort Inn was throbbing with excited Souths fans from all over the world when Peter sent the general frisson to another level. Usually a picture-perfect melange of shiny cufflinks and crisp business shirts, he fronted up with the crumpled air of a man who had not slept in days. Several hairs were out of place. Stubble was evident. His eyes darted, spun and skipped like championship yo-yos. His conversation was rambling, barely able to stay on topic for more than a couple of seconds. And that was before his first beer. He had spent the previous week bouncing between university lectures, media interviews, sponsors' dinners, media interviews, players' meetings and media interviews. He bounced everywhere, it seemed, except between the sheets of his queen-size bed at the Comfort Inn. Having regularly dealt with Peter since he and Russell Crowe launched their bid for Souths 2½ years earlier, his hardwired edge was no surprise. But this time he was more than wired. He was possessed. Peter sacrificed himself to the task at hand as if his entire reputation hinged on its success. Failure was a personal affront and that's why he is hurting so much today. The West Australian might have been a league layman, but that only increased the demand to devote more of himself to achieving the unthinkable - making Souths strong again. In the end, it was a dangerous obsession - for him and the club. When he and Crowe were trying to convince Souths members to sell in early 2006, Peter pushed the word harder than a Mormon on Saturday morning rounds. He visited members in cities all across NSW and Queensland and when all appeared lost, stayed up until the wee hours before the vote personally phoning them to plead for their ballots. The next day, he and Crowe defied all sober predictions to claim 75.8 per cent of the vote - just 16 ballots more than they needed. In hindsight, it might have been a good idea for Peter to quit while he was ahead. His business partner Crowe insisted on being detached but Peter took the opposite tact. He threw himself into Souths as executive chairman for the past two years. Thrashed himself against its cardinal and myrtle walls for not a single cent. Event leant the club another $4 million. It wasn't always appreciated. Staff claimed Peter "micro-managed everything". Having invested so much of himself, Peter wanted everything to plan and seemed to not always trust a subordinate to do the job as well as he thought he could. He would call staff late at night and talk to them endlessly about the finest details, like the placement of tables and chairs at an upcoming event. At the same time he was always thinking big, like putting on a centenary concert for the team's 100th birthday or a re-enactment of fans' 1999 march through the city. The problem was, he missed the important bits in between. Although the office headcount was doubled, long-serving staff were annoyed by an influx of US marketing-speak that arrived with their new colleagues. Fan days were suddenly branded as "fan appreciation days". One recent addition did not even know who the late and great Jack Gibson was. The fact Souths made their first finals appearance in 18 years only wallpapered over what was festering above. In their zeal to turn fortunes around, the new owners had overspent and the returns simply didn't compensate. Although sponsorship was strong, it could not begin to cover a huge spike in wages and the cost of new gadgets and upgrades for their training ground at Erskineville. Peter and Crowe lost $4.2 million. Painful staff cuts followed and office morale inevitably suffered. Through it all Peter kept pushing, jockeying to be heard above the din in league land. If he was growing unpopular with his own, he was well and truly on the nose with bosses from rival NRL clubs who viewed him as an arrogant upstart. But they were wrong to completely ignore him. Advocating poker machine bans and breath-testing, Peter was too confronting for many of league's blazer brigade who dearly hang on to justify their relevance. The sad thing is that the game - decaying in Sydney because of complacency and cronyism, could do with a revolutionary voice. Maybe Peter's problem was that he was heard too often. Love him or hate him, league needs people like him.

I'll go listen to George now, thanks Ali, for telling me it shouldn't raise my BP. LOLI didn't say it wouldn't raise it at all. I just refuse to let him give me a headache any more!!
Thanks for that article, Cindy. That's the way I've always thought of Peter and I was thinking that the main reason for him stepping down may just be that he's burnt out. Everybody goes through burn outs and he certainly has reason. He's given his heart and soul and all his time and energy to Souths. Has anybody bothered to think of what it might be doing to him mentally and physically and how it might be effecting his family? He's set into motion the basics for big change and hopefully most of those things can be followed through by his successors. Hopefully nobody will forget who did all of the initial work. The spotlight seems to be on Souths because it's always easy to kick a club when they are at the bottom of the ladder but why isn't anybody really digging into the stability of the other Sydney clubs. It's been mentioned that the other clubs are in trouble, too. What have they been doing to try to correct the situation? I haven't heard that they have been doing anything to secure their future. Why should Souths be the one to relocate or merge with another team when Russell and Peter saw the writing on the wall several years ago and started making the changes to try to secure a future for Souths? Just who is it that may be sitting pretty when the other teams have their clubs going into total failure because it's too late to change in a few years? Sure it's a gamble for Souths but it's better than sitting around like the other clubs doing nothing and having people whining that failure is inevitable. Ali
